What is dental scaling and why is it important?
Dental scaling is a prophylactic dental procedure in which the dentist removes tartar and plaque buildup on the surface of the teeth - deposits that daily brushing at home cannot completely remove.
Calculus is formed by the mineralization of bacterial plaque with salts in saliva. Once formed, it adheres firmly to the surface of the teeth and gums, both above (supragingival) and below (subgingival) the gum. Left untreated, tartar can cause:
- Gingivitis - gum inflammation and bleeding when brushing
- Periodontitis - the condition that destroys the bone and supporting tissues of the teeth
- Tooth decay - favored by plaque bacteria
- Halitosis (bad breath) - caused by bacteria in tartar
Scaling prevents all these complications. This is why dentists recommend having it every 6 months as part of a preventive oral hygiene program.
How do we perform scaling in our office in Sector 6?
At SmileCity we use modern ultrasound equipment for an effective and comfortable result. Here is how a complete dental hygiene session goes:
1. Ultrasonic ultrasound
The doctor uses an ultrasound machine whose metal handle vibrates rapidly. The sonic vibrations disintegrate and dislodge tartar from the surface of the teeth, both supragingival and subgingival, without damaging the enamel. The procedure is painless - in rare cases, in patients with increased sensitivity, local anesthesia may be used.
2. Professional brushing
After tartar removal, the doctor performs a professional brushing with rotating instruments and special fluoride pastes. Brushing polishes the surface of the teeth and removes the fine traces of bacterial plaque left after scaling.
3. Airflow (optional, recommended)
The final step is the Airflow procedure - a jet of compressed air, water and fine baking soda powder projected directly onto the tooth surface. It removes stains caused by coffee, tobacco or food dyes and effectively cleans interdental spaces. The result visually resembles a slight whitening.
Total duration: 30-60 minutes, depending on the amount of scale. Recommended frequency: every 6 months (every 3-4 months for smokers).
Why have regular scaling?
- Whiter and cleaner teeth - tartar removal restores the natural look of your teeth without additional whitening costs
- Healthy gums - eliminate the root cause of gingivitis and periodontitis
- Fresh breath - bacteria in tartar are the main cause of halitosis
- Prevent cavities - untreated plaque leads to enamel demineralization
- Prevent more complex and expensive treatments - timely scaling prevents expensive and complex treatments
- Spot problems early - the doctor may identify incipient cavities or other conditions during the procedure
Who needs dental scaling?
Tooth cleaning is recommended for all adults, regardless of the quality of their daily oral hygiene. Tartritis occurs even in people who brush correctly and consistently. It is especially indicated for:
- Persons presenting bleeding gums brushing
- Patients with visible scale deposits (yellowish-brown spots on the teeth)
- Smokers - where scale and stains form more quickly
- People with persistent bad breath
- Patients with fixed braces or implants - requiring adapted professional sanitation
- Pregnant women - where hormonal changes increase the risk of gingivitis

Frequently asked questions about scaling
Does scaling damage tooth enamel?
No. Modern ultrasonic units are calibrated to work on tartar only. Dental enamel is not affected by the procedure. On the contrary, leaving tartar in the long term affects enamel and gums.
Does it hurt?
The procedure is painless for the vast majority of patients. There may be slight sensations of pressure or tenderness, especially in patients with a lot of tartar or receding gums. Local anesthesia may be applied on request.
How many times a year should I have my teeth cleaned?
The standard recommendation is 2 times a year (every 6 months). Smokers or people prone to rapid tartar build-up may need to have their teeth cleaned every 3-4 months.
Can I have scaling if I have dental implants or fixed braces?
Yes. At SmileCity we have special instruments and handles for sanitizing implants and orthodontic appliances, without the risk of damaging the prosthetic work.
What should I do after scaling?
In the first 24-48 hours avoid colored foods and drinks (coffee, tea, red wine), smoking and very cold or hot foods. Slight transient sensitivity is normal. Continue regular brushing, flossing and using a fluoride toothpaste.
