And immediately the question arises: What do I eat now? Can I drink coffee? How long do I have to wait?

These are questions we frequently hear at SmileCity, our dental clinic in Ghencea, Sector 6.

What you do in the first 24 hours after scaling can make the difference between a lasting result and teeth that stain again.

In this article you'll find the full list of foods allowed and forbidden after scaling, with clear explanations for each rule.

Why are there restrictions after scaling?

Before the food list, it's worth understanding why these recommendations exist.

Professional ultrasonic scaling removes tartar and mineralized plaque from tooth surfaces and gums. Immediately after the procedure:

Tooth enamel is temporarily more porous

Clean teeth absorb pigments more easily than usual, so they stain faster.

Gums are slightly sore or sensitive

Especially if there was tart tartar under the gum or if you haven't had scaling in a long time.

Fluoride treatment takes time

If you received fluoride treatment after detartraj (as we do at SmileCity), fluoride needs 30 minutes to integrate into the enamel. Eating too soon will cancel the effect.

How long do you wait before eating after scaling?

Rule of thumb: 30 minutes without food or drink immediately after the procedure.

If you have received fluoride application or desensitizing treatment, your doctor will confirm this break. Plain water is allowed after 30 minutes.

What you can eat after scaling ✅

Here's the list of foods allowed and recommended in the first 24-48 hours after scaling:

Soft foods without intense pigment: ideal

Yoghurt simple or with banana: does not stain, soft texture does not irritate gums

Mashed potatoes or legume: consistent, effortless chewing

Cooked chicken or steamed (well-cooked, tender): protein, no colored spices

Cream soup (no tomatoes, no beetroot): warm temperature, not hot

Soft-boiled eggs or omelette: easy to chew, does not stain

Bananas, ripe apples, ripe pearssoft, without aggressive acidity

Pasta with butter or cheeseAvoid tomato sauce on the first day

Boiled rice, griș, oat flakes: suitable anytime

White cheese (unsalted cheese or ricotta)

Soft white breadno crispy crust

Drinks allowed

Flat water: the best choice, every time

Milkwhite, pigment-free, soothing for sensitive gums

White tea or chamomile tea (warm, not hot)

What NOT to eat and drink after scaling ❌

First 30 minutes

Absolutely nothing (except water, after this period).

First 24 hours: strictly avoid

Drinks that stain

❌ Coffee: coffee dyes quickly deposit on cleaned and porous enamel

❌ Black tea or green tea: coffee-like effect

❌ Red wine: one of the most aggressive coloring agents

❌ Coloring juices (blueberries, apples, cherries, blackberries, cranberries)

❌ Cola, Pepsi or any colored fizzy drink: double attack: pigment + acidity

Foods that stain or irritate

❌ Reds and ketchup: deep red pigment

❌ Beetroot: the most powerful natural colorant

❌ Intensely colored sauces (curry, soy sauce, mujdei)

❌ Berries (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries)

❌ Chocolate (especially dark chocolate)

❌ Colorful sweets, candy, chewing gum

Hard or crunchy food (2-3 days)

❌ Chips, popcorn, pretzels: hard bits can get between your teeth or irritate your gums

❌ Walnuts, almond, seedssame problem, plus risk of interdental blockage

❌ Raw carrot, whole apples: strong chewing, pressure on the gums

❌ Strong meat (beef, chop, crispy): excessive chewing force

Extreme temperatures (24-48 hours)

❌ Very hot food or drinks: irritates already sensitive gums

❌ Ice cream, lemonade with ice cubes: increased cold sensitivity after scaling

Other

❌ Alcohol in general: gingival irritant, can mask pain and delay the onset of problems

❌ Smokingminimum 24-48 hours. The first 2-3 days there may be slight bleeding when brushing: this is normal. If it persists after 5 days, contact your doctor.

✅ Mouthwash with chlorhexidine or salt water

It helps soothe gums and prevents infections. At SmileCity, if you have specific instructions from your doctor, follow them as a priority.

✅ Floss gently

Don't give up, but be gentle for the first 2-3 days.

✅ Toothpaste for sensitive teeth

If you feel sensitive to hot or cold, use a potassium nitrate or strontium chlorate toothpaste (e.g. Sensodyne, Colgate Sensitive) for a few days.

✅ Plain water at room temperature

Hydration is important: choose water especially on the first day.

Is it normal to feel sensitivity after scaling?

Yes, this is completely normal. Especially if:

You haven't had scaling for more than a year

You have subgingival tartar (below the gumline)

You have incipient gingivitis or periodontitis

Cold or hot sensitivity usually disappears in 2-7 days. If the pain is intense or prolonged, return to the clinic: the doctor may apply a desensitizing treatment or additional fluoride.

How many hours don't you drink coffee after scaling?

This is probably the most frequently asked question we receive. The clear answer:

Minimum 24-48 hours without coffee after scaling.

Why? Coffee contains tanninoids: pigments that deposit on tooth enamel. Immediately after scaling, the enamel is cleaned and temporarily more receptive to dyes. If you drink coffee too early, you risk staining your teeth faster than before the procedure.

If you find it difficult to give up coffee for a day or two, you can drink through a straw (minimizes contact with your teeth) and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.

How long does scaling last?

The results of professional scaling last on average 6 months if:

Brush properly at least twice a day

Use dental floss or mouthwash

Avoid too much coffee, tea and tobacco

Re-visit your hygiene every 6-12 months (or 3 months if you have periodontal problems)

At SmileCity, the complete hygiene package (scaling + brushing + airflow + instruction + consultation) costs 350 RON. Appointments can be made on 0732 001 200.

Conclusion

The after-care rules aren't complicated, but they do matter:

30 minutes with nothing immediately after

24-48 hours without coffee, black tea, red wine, colored or very cold/hot foods

2-3 days without hard and crunchy foods

Gentle brushing, fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash if indicated

By following these recommendations, you maintain the results of your hygiene for longer and protect your gums in the recovery
