CBCT is not automatically „better” for every problem; the appropriate imaging modality is the one that provides the necessary information with a justified radiation dose.

What is a panoramic X-ray?

A panoramic X-ray captures the teeth, maxilla, and mandible in a single image, providing a useful overview. It is frequently used to evaluate the dentition, wisdom teeth, and certain lesions, as well as for initial planning.

Because they are two-dimensional images, the structures may overlap and do not provide accurate 3D measurements of the bone.

What is a dental CBCT?

CBCT stands for cone beam computed tomography. The device produces a set of images that allow for a three-dimensional reconstruction of the area being examined.

The dentist can assess the thickness and height of the bone, the position of the mandibular canal, its relationship to the sinus, and other structures relevant to surgery or endodontic treatment.

Why is CBCT useful for dental implants?

The implant must be positioned in the bone at an angle and depth that are consistent with the anatomy and the future crown. A 3D image can help measure the bone and assess the surrounding anatomical structures.

This is particularly important when bone is limited, near a sinus or a nerve, or when bone grafting is planned.

Is a CBCT scan performed on all patients receiving implants?

The indication depends on the individual case and the information required. The ADA and AAOMR guidelines published in 2026 emphasize that X-rays, including CBCT, should be selected based on clinical examination and diagnostic need, rather than performed automatically as a universal routine.

The idea is simple: the investigation must yield information that changes or supports the diagnosis and treatment plan.

Is a CBCT scan necessary for a cavity?

As a general rule, cavities are assessed through examination and appropriate 2D X-rays, not through routine CBCT scans. CBCT may be indicated in certain complex cases, but it is not the first choice for every dental problem.

The doctor makes a decision based on the signs, symptoms, and what needs to be clarified.

Can CBCT be useful for root canal treatment?

In endodontics, CBCT can be helpful in selected cases: complex anatomy, retreatments, lesions that are difficult to interpret, or suspected fractures. A retroalveolar X-ray remains very important and is sufficient in many situations.

The use of 3D imaging is warranted when the additional information is relevant to treatment.

Which test involves more radiation?

The dose depends on the device, the scan field, and the protocol. In general, a CBCT involves a higher radiation dose than a single 2D dental image, which is why it should be used judiciously and with a scan field that is as appropriate as possible for the specific case.

ADA recommends applying the principles of justification and reasonable reduction of exposure.

What do the terms "hemicarcade," "arcade," and "bimaxillary" CBCT mean?

The difference lies in the area being scanned. Sometimes only a small region is needed, other times a full arch or both jaws. A smaller field of view may be sufficient for a localized problem.

SmileCity offers CBCT scans of the single arch, full arch, and both jaws, as well as panoramic and retroalveolar X-rays. View current radiology rates.

Can I come in just for an X-ray?

Please check with the clinic to confirm the exact availability and whether a referral is required. If the examination is part of a SmileCity treatment plan, the doctor can recommend the appropriate type after the consultation.

It's important not to choose the „highest-resolution scan” on your own just because it seems more comprehensive.

How do you choose between a panoramic X-ray and a CBCT?

It is not the patient's role to make technical decisions. Tell the doctor what your problem is and what treatment is needed, and the doctor will choose the test that answers the clinical question.

For the patient, the important question is: „What information does this test provide, and how does it affect treatment?”.

Why does the scanned field need to be adapted to the problem?

With CBCT, the dentist can choose a smaller or larger field of view depending on the area of interest. For a single implant, a limited region may be sufficient, while more extensive plans may require an arch or both jaws.

Choosing the appropriate field helps obtain the necessary information without unnecessarily scanning areas that do not affect the treatment.

Do I need to repeat the test if I have an older one?

Not automatically. The doctor checks the date, the quality, the area covered, and whether any relevant changes have occurred in the meantime. Sometimes the old test results are sufficient; other times, they do not answer the current question.

It's helpful to bring any previous X-rays and CBCTs to your appointment, along with the reports if you have them.

How do you prepare for your appointment, and what information should you bring?

Make a note of when the problem started, what symptoms you’re experiencing, what dental treatments you’ve had in that area, and what medications you’re currently taking. If you have X-rays, CBCTs, medical reports, or documents regarding implants and previous dental work, bring them to your appointment. Tell your dentist if you smoke, have any allergies or chronic conditions, or are undergoing treatments that could affect healing. It’s also helpful to specify what concerns you most: pain, duration, aesthetics, cost, or the number of procedures. An effective consultation isn’t just about receiving a diagnosis—it’s about understanding your options, the sequence of steps, and the reasons why a particular approach is recommended. Ask for clarification if a term is unclear, and ask what happens if you choose to postpone treatment or opt for an alternative. This way, you can make an informed decision and accurately compare your options, rather than relying solely on the price of a single procedure.

Radiografia panoramică oferă o imagine 2D de ansamblu a dinților și maxilarelor, în timp ce CBCT-ul oferă informații 3D despre […]

[32

post-2938","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-implant-dentar
["GET
